The oral music of Sediq and Truku

According to the oral history of Sediq and Truku, White Rock is the origin place of their ancestors. As hunting, White Rock is like a lighthouse leading the hunters and preventing them from wandering in wide Central Mountain Area. White Rock becomes the magical rock "Pusu Btunux" protecting the whole tribe and White Rock Mountain becomes holy mountain "Bunobong" in their mind.

Based on the same legend of origin, we can find that Sediq and Truku have the same sources. Sediq lives in the mountain area of Renai township in Nantou County. Its population is about ten thousands. In terms of the dialect systems, Sedip can be divided into Tkdaya, Toda and Truku groups. Truku is mainly located at Shioulin, Wanrung, Juoshi townships in Hualien County. Truku is the main group in Hualein, but we can find other two groups there. The ancestors of Truku came from Pingsheng and Jinguan tribes, Renai township in Nantou County. From 17th century, Truku crossed Central Mountain Area and migrated to nowadays the North of Hualien. During the Japanese-ruled period, they were distributed over the whole Hualien. Until today, its population is about twenty thousands.

From the viewpoint of anthropology, Sediq of Nantou County and Truku of Hualien County were classified to be the subtribes of Atayal during the Japanese-ruled period. These two sub-tribes are called as East- Sediq and West-Sediq according to the natural demarcation line, Central Mountain Area. In fact, after the long-term differentiation and migration, the cultural differences between two sub-tribes increased and shaped the respective tribal consciousness. On 14th January, 2004, East-Sediq changed their name to be "Truku" formally which displays further their own tribal consciousness.
